A THREE VOLUME HISTORICAL TRILOGY

When does Presidential Power corrupts?

"Covenant Betrayed" is a historical fiction trilogy. A passionate simple love story that spans the chaotic times of the sixties: including the civil rights era, morphing into the war and antiwar debate and political radicalism on both the right and left, which divided this country similar to that of the civil war.

History is difficult to evaluate in the presence. Historical fiction emphasizes the angst of uncertainty; the terror of fears; the passion, the ecstasy; the confusion, the despairs of the epoch. With historical fiction, history comes alive. It gives one a sense of being there, experiencing and understanding the ambiguity of those times. In addition, hopefully, learning the lessons of histories so that we do not repeat ourselves.

When does Presidential Power corrupts?

"Covenant Betrayed" is a historical fiction trilogy. A passionate simple love story that spans the chaotic times of the sixties: including the civil rights era, morphing into the war and antiwar debate and political radicalism, both the right and left, which divided this country similar to that of the civil war.

History is difficult to evaluate in the presence. Historical fiction emphasizes the angst of uncertainty; the terror of fears; the passion, the ecstasy; the confusion, the despairs of the epoch. With historical fiction, history comes alive, gives one a sense of being there, experiencing and understanding the ambiguity of those times. In addition, hopefully, learning the lessons of histories so that we do not repeat ourselves.

One cannot understand the Sixties without understanding the Fifties. The Fifties were the first time the American youth had excess freedom. Before the 50’s they worked on the family farm; dusk till dawn, slaved in the sweat shops, 12 hours a day, six days a week; starved in the depression; and fought  not knowing it they would be alive the next day in World War II and the Korean War. Than, suddenly, came the fifties. First, there were the beatniks, lead by their spiritual leader Williams Burroughs, than the “bad boys of rock and roll Elvis, Johnny Cochran, and Jerry Lee Lewis prevailed.

This excess freedom, led to freedom to think, freedom to question, freedom to challenge, a spiritual renaissance

In the sixties, the peaceful non-violent Civil Rights Movement, progressed to Black Power and the Black Panthers. The Civil Rights Movement was followed by the creeping involvement in Vietnam, first with military advisors, than massive troop deployments to Vietnam resulting in death, violence, destruction, and … then disillusion. And complementing the war, initially, the educational teach-ins led to massive antiwar demonstrations, to the Weathermen busting windows on Michigan Ave and planting bombs in the Capital. This all digressed to the “second civil war” which recently resurfaced with the Iraq War. I'm now afraid, we are progressing to the “third civil war”.

Throughout the three books, we follow the characters lives from romantic innocence to reality to expressionism. Some fighting in Vietnam, some protesting the war, some marching for civil rights, friendships destroyed and than repaired. Some lives lost, some destroyed, some survived, but all caught up in the hubris characterized by a gross failure of governmental leadership. Those betrayed the most have their names on a black granite wall in Washington DC.

I wrote Covenant Betrayed as an historical fiction novel of the sixties. Some facts in the novel may be wrong as we know them today, but were based on the information that was available in the conventional media at that time. The reason for this was to give the reader a sense of the problems, as they happened, not with the history of looking back. Separating the real from the imagined during the present is much more difficult but provides insight into these confusing times. Thus, I wrote the books with this ambiguity of those times in mind. Hopefully, we can learn from this exercise.

One glaring example of fiction was the pretense of going to war in Vietnam.--- The attacks on the destroyers in the Gulf of Tompkin. Today, we know that they did not exist. Sadly, the results was an eight year war that left the United States in a quagmire from which it could not escape, resulting in the deaths of 58,000 Americans and  two million Vietnamese.

Today we face the same issues. We are in a similar quagmire. We're trapped in a  war which we cannot win, and that continually escalates in violence. If we stay, more will die. If we leave, more will die. To date, over 100,000 Iraqis have died, most being non-combatants.

Like Vietnam, the United States declared war on a country that was never a threat to us. Not one Iraqi citizen was a member of the terrorist group that attacked the WTC. Saddam, no matter how bad he was, never threatened our security, The President co-opted Congressional powers by using the pretenses of lies to extend presidential powers to conduct unilaterally a peremptory attack on a country without the declaration of war, a violation of the Constitution.

Therefore, I decided to publish Covenant Betrayed, a trilogy I wrote from 1979 to 1985. The questions I asked: was there available information at the beginnings of the Vietnam War to make a rational decision that going to war would be tragic? In an attempt to answer that question, I research all the current media of the times.

The answer is a definite yes. Like Vietnam, today Iraq, is Vietnam Redux. Yes, one can argue that there are many differences… but fundamentally, the primary similarities are present.

Our  National Hubris prevents us from saying we made a terrible mistake.
